Rocco's Log Restoration

Imagine a Raindrop...

Mother Nature has a sense of humor. How else can you explain rain? For as much good as rain does in the world, for a log home it’s downright destructive.

Picture a raindrop. Not just any drop. A raindrop with attitude. A game-cancelling, picnic-stopping, run-for-cover raindrop that doesn’t care where it ends up after splatting the earth.

These are the raindrops that head straight for the bottom few log courses on a log home. These are the raindrops that ruin, and the drops that degrade the integrity of a log home.

Then the equally brutal brother, the sprinkler, gets in on the game, double-teaming the damage doing. Round and round it goes, pummeling day and night, season after season.

Unprotected log walls absorb rain and sprinkler water and start to rot. Maybe not this month, or even this year, but over time, neglected logs will rot and weaken the walls of a log home.

That’s the bad news. The good news is that the remarkably skilled craftsmen at Rocco’s Log Home Restoration can restore any log home to its full beauty and structural wholeness. They have repaired hundreds of log homes, as you are about to see.

Services

Rocco is the partner you need to restore any log home. Sure he does chinking, media blasting, and staining too, but replacing rotted logs requires an experienced expert. Why? Because working on a log home isn’t for the average tradesman or builder, or someone who happens to do some woodwork on the side. It takes a very unique set of skills to restore the log structure and beauty of a water-damaged log home.

The crew at Rocco’s Log Home Restoration are renowned for their ability to assess the damage and properly repair log walls. What they do is save the legacy of a log home so it can be enjoyed for generations to come.

Restoration

When a course or more of logs have rotted, they threaten the foundation of a log home. If there is noticeable weathering on the lower sections of log home walls, it is time to be concerned that it could turn into costly damage. Considering what log homeowners are up against with rain and moisture, it will take more than a coat or two of stain. If there is serious log rot, it is time to bring in experienced log craftsmen to replace the damaged logs of the log house. It is time to call Rocco’s Log Home Restoration.

Media Blasting

We know that moisture harms log homes, so when old stain, paint, or weather discoloration needs to be removed from log homes we cannot use a power water sprayer, and chemical washes are harmful to the environment. We only use a dry method for removing old finishes, and media blasting is the best option. Using dry glass beads and high-pressure compressed air, we are able to strip away everything we need in order to get back to the natural log color and grain. Then we can sand and apply new paint or stain.

Staining

Staining the exterior log walls of a log home is one of the most important aspects of regular and preventive maintenance. More so than the quality of the stain, it’s the application that properly protects a log home. The experts at Rocco’s Log Home Restoration are unmatched in their knowledge of the proper application of log home stains, along with pre-treating log home walls for decay and insect infestation prevention.

Log Home Restoration — Expert FAQs

log cabin

We assess structure, weathering, and rot, then repair or replace logs, seal gaps, and finish with stain/sealant to restore strength and appearance. The work spans inspection, repairs, media blasting prep, chinking/caulking, and protective finishing for longevity.

  • Full condition assessment and moisture/decay checks
  • Targeted log repairs or matched log replacement
  • Surface prep (dry media blasting), sanding, and cleanup
  • Chinking/caulking for airtight, water-resistant seals
  • Staining and sealing tuned to climate and wood species

See foundational background on log cabin construction basics and a linked data entry describing log cabins.

Dry media blasting removes old coatings and discoloration without soaking the logs, revealing fresh wood for better stain adhesion. It’s a controlled, wood-friendly way to strip finishes and expose underlying issues for repair.

  • Strips paint, failed stain, mold, and surface grime
  • Opens pores for even, durable stain application
  • Avoids adding moisture to susceptible log courses
  • Gentler than traditional sandblasting on timber surfaces

Learn the technique in abrasive blasting fundamentals and its structured knowledge entry.

Application quality is what actually protects logs—consistent prep, coverage, and back-brushing help block UV and water intrusion. A proper finish also supports future maintenance cycles so the home stays sound longer.

  • Shields against sunlight, rain, and temperature swings
  • Improves water repellency while allowing logs to dry
  • Reduces checking, discoloration, and finish failure
  • Sets up predictable touch-up and recoat intervals

Explore log-appropriate stain fundamentals and the linked data item for wood stains.

Chinking is the flexible seal between logs that keeps out air and moisture while preserving the cabin’s aesthetic. Modern elastomeric materials expand/contract with temperature swings, boosting efficiency and durability.

  • Prevents drafts, water intrusion, and insect entry
  • Works with caulking to seal checks and joints
  • Maintains traditional appearance with modern performance
  • Reduces energy loss and interior temperature swings

See a primer on log-to-log joint sealing and the structured entry describing chinking.

We diagnose the cause, then splice (“dutchman”) or replace affected logs with matched wood, followed by sealing and finish protection. Addressing moisture sources and re-finishing prevents repeat failures.

  • Inspection for decay, insects, and moisture pathways
  • Selective log end repair, saddle-notch fixes, or full replacement
  • Remediation of grade/sprinkler splash issues where applicable
  • Protective coatings and chinking reset for long-term integrity

We review moisture exposure, coating condition, chinking performance, and structural areas, then outline a scope with timeline and materials. You’ll get recommendations for repairs, prep (like media blasting), and finishing to protect the home for the long term.

  • Condition report covering staining, sealing, and chinking
  • Repair plan for rot, checks, or insect-affected sections
  • Surface prep strategy to ensure new finishes bond properly
  • Transparent proposal with phasing and maintenance guidance
